Udaan, Dabangg lead Filmfare Awards 2011

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol won the Best Actor and Actress award respectively for My Name Is Khan at the 56th Filmfare Awards, which was ruled by a small budget movie Udaan that grabbed seven prizes including Best Supporting Actor (Male), Best Film (Critics), Best Story, Cinematography, Screenplay, Best Background Music and Best Sound Design Award.
Special Awards:
Ninety-year-old legendary singer Manna De received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Amitabh Bachchan received an award for completing 40 years in the film industry. Madhuri Dixit recived the award for completing 25 years in the film industry.

Kerala artist enters Guinness for dance marathon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eminent Mohinyattam exponent Kalamandalam Hemalatha has entered the Guinness Book of World Record for the' longest dance marathon.'

Hemalatha set the mark, erasing the record of Hyderabad-based Vettikotta Yadagiri, through her 123-hour performance staged in Thrissur in September last.

The certificate, received by Hemalatha, said " the longest marathon by an individual was 123 hours and 15 minutes achieved by Kalamandalam Hemalatha."

"More than a personal achievement, I consider this as a recognition of Mohiniyattam, the unique dance form of Kerala", Hemalatha said.

"When I embarked on the mission, there was criticism from certain quarters that this was a cheap stunt which marred the beauty and elegance of Mohiniyattam. But I was convinced that mine is a humble attempt to know the world about this performing tradtion unique to Kerala", she said.

Hemalalatha compelted the record-making performance in her second attempt after she had to call off her first bid after 64 hours of dancing as she fell ill on stage.

The artist, who now runs a dance school in Thrissur, said the Guinness honour came as an inspiration to launch programmes to instil interest in Kerala dance forms among youngsters. She said planned to embark on a one-month-old all-Kerala relay from January 26 to create health and physical fitness awareness among women and children.

Ford unveils its first all-electric car

LAS VEGAS: Ford unveiled its first strictly electric car on Friday, a Focus which is expected to get up to 160km on a single charge and will be available in North America late this year.

Mr Alan Mulally, chief executive of the number two US automaker, introduced the four-door passenger car at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Mr Mulally declined to detail the hatchback's total range or how much it would cost, but a Ford spokesman said the Focus Electric's mileage on a single charge would be 'competitive' with similar electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf.

The Nissan Leaf has a range of up to 160km before needing to be hooked up to a power outlet.

Ford said the lithium-ion battery in the Focus, which has a top speed of 136kmh can be fully charged at a home 240V charging station in three to four hours, half the time of the Leaf.

Mr Mulally acknowledged the need for regular charges would be seen as a drawback by some customers.

LAS VEGAS: Nebraska's 17-year-old Teresa Scanlan was named Miss America Saturday becoming the youngest winner ever in the pageant's history after a night of being judged for poise, talent, fitness and knowledge.

Scanlan wowed the judges wearing a stunning white evening gown and tickling the ivories on piano with rousing rendition of "White Water Chopped Sticks" in the talent competition.

In the final question, she was asked about the leaking of confidential government information by website WikiLeaks and whether US security or the people's right to know sensitive information was more important.

Scanlan saw the leaks as a matter of espionage and said: "When it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know ... We can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case."

The first runner-up, who will take Miss America's place in the case Scanlan can't perform her new role, was Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady.

Among other noteworthy contestants was Miss Delaware, Kayla Martell, who made it into the semifinals. Martell suffers from a disease, alopecia areata, that caused her to lose all her hair at age 10, and she competed in a wig.

This year marked the 90th pageant in the history of Miss America. The organization runs achievement programs and is a major provider of scholarship assistance for young women. In 2010, the group and its state and local affiliates helped give out more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.

Fifty-three women were chosen from states and territories across the country in local contests before they headed to Las Vegas and the final pageant Saturday.

As Miss America, Scanlan will take the next year to travel the United States and raise awareness about eating disorders.

Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron from Virginia, 22, was a goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network, and she spent the year helping raise awareness for HIV/AIDS.

In the week ahead of Saturday's competition, contestants were judged in preliminary events for evening wear, fitness and swimsuits and answer questions in an interview.

From those events, 11 semifinalists were chosen to compete Saturday night. Joining them were four other contestants -- two picked by online voting and two others by the remaining young women in the pageant.

The 15 semifinalists were narrowed Saturday in contests that again include evening wear, fitness and swimsuits, talent and a final on-stage question for the top five women. Then, the top five were ranked to get to the new Miss America.

This year, seven panelists judged contestants in the final round as they answered their question in 20 seconds. The judges -- including TV talk show co-host Joy Behar, "Dancing With the Stars" professional dancer Tony Dovolani, and "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry, among others -- watched for confidence, knowledge and quick thinking in formulating an answer.

Joining Miss Nebraska and Arkansas among the five finalists were women from Hawaii, Washington and Oklahoma.

The show included a rousing opening musical number by all 53 contestants, and it was hosted by TV personalities Brooke Burke and Chris Harrison.

Journalists ask police to register case against Rani

PATIALA: Journalists in Patiala have asked the police to register a case against Rani Mukherjee, other actors and the filmmaker for using vulgar language in 'No One killed Jessica'.

The complaint was filed by the Patiala Press Club through its president Parveen Komal and was submitted to Inspector General of Police (Patiala zone) P.S. Gill, district police chief Gurpreet Singh Gill and Deputy Commissioner D.S. Garewal.

"Press is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy and using such kind of vulgar words in the movie is a direct insult of the media. This action is also an insult to women," Komal told reporters.

He said that the producers of the film had resorted to use of vulgar language to earn money. The complaint sought a case be registered for vulgarity. Those mentioned in the complaint include Rani Mukerji, actress Vidya Balan, other actors, the producers, the director and the script writer among others.

Once they have evolved their inimitable style, some like Naina Balsavar Ahmed, former Miss Femina, start their own retail business. Naina, who often falls in love with most of her own creations, operates from an upmarket store in Delhi. Her pieces can cost anything between Rs 600 and a couple of lakhs.

Incidentally, design studios that specialise in custom-made jewellery are becoming increasingly popular.

The demand for sleek and ready-to wear designer jewellery has, in turn, spurred the demand for cheaper alloys like platinum and gunmetal. Adds Manikchand: These days designers are even ready to experiment with paper, wood, ceramics and plastics. Given the endless possibilities, the designer must understand the metal that he is handling. He will also be immersed in a world full of gems, diamonds, rubies and sapphires, which he should be able to handle with acumen. The ability to identify and rate a good gem or a stone can throw up career option as an appraiser and help one in the retail business, if one is so inclined.
The Delhi-based National Institute of Fashion Technology, the Noida-based JDTI, the Mumbai-based Gemmological Institute of India, the Chennai-based Dr Dhamambal Government Polytechnic for Women and the Surat-based Diamond Institute of India are offering jewellery designing and allied courses.

Sneha Ullal bagged the role of Lucky in Lucky: No Time for Love with Salman Khan. The latter was fresh from his break up with Aishwarya Rai who was initially offered the role. She worked with Salman Khan’s brother Sohail Khan in Aryan.
