Herkimer Diamonds

"Herkimer Diamonds" is the name given to the doubly terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer County, New York and surrounding areas. Examples of these crystals are shown in the photo at right. Note that these crystals have the typical hexagonal habit of quartz, however, instead of having a termination on one end they are doubly terminated. This is a result of the crystals growing with very little or no contact with their host rock. Such doubly terminated crystals are very rare and this is part of what makes Herkimer Diamonds so popular with mineral collectors.
The host rock for Herkimer Diamonds is the Cambrian-age, Little Falls Dolostone. The Little Falls Dolostone was deposited about 500 million years ago and the Herkimer Diamonds formed in cavities within the dolostone. These cavities are frequently lined with drusy quartz crystals and often are coated with a tarry hydrocarbon (see image below).

Although Herkimer County, New York is the location for which these crystals are named, similar doubly terminated quartz crystals have been found in a few other locations, including Arizona, Afghanistan, Norway, Ukraine and China. They have the same appearance but can not rightfully be called "Herkimers". The doubly terminated quartz crystals shown in the lower right photo are from a deposit in Afghanistan. 

Who Discovered Herkimer Diamonds?

The Herkimer Diamonds of New York are not a recent discovery. The Mohawk Indians and early settlers knew about the crystals. They found them in stream sediments and plowed fields. These people were amazed with the crystals and immediately held them in high esteem.

Herkimer Diamond Mines

Some of the best places to find Herkimer Diamonds today are located along New York State Route 28 in Middleville, New York. (When visiting this area it is important to remember that all land in New York either belongs to the government or is private property. Collecting minerals from government lands is illegal in New York and collecting on private property always requires permission in advance.)

There are two commercial mines on New York State Route 28 at Middleville, New York. These are: Ace of Diamonds Mine and Herkimer Diamond Mine. Both allow collectors to enter and prospect for a nominal fee. Both locations also rent equipment such as hammers, wedges and other small tools. They also have small exhibit areas where you can view and/or purchase specimens.

Mining for Herkimer Diamonds

The key to finding Herkimer Diamonds is a knowledge that they occur in cavities (vugs) within the Little Falls Dolostone (see photo above). These cavities can be smaller than a pea or several feet across. At both of the mines listed above the Little Falls Dolostone is exposed at the surface and a significant amount of broken rock is scattered across the quarry floor.

"Find and Break" Prospecting

The easy way to prospect is to find pieces of vuggy rock and break them open with a heavy hammer. If you are lucky the rock will break to reveal one or several Herkimer Diamonds within a cavity. If your visit to the mine will last just a few hours or even a single day this is a good way to spend your time.

Dolomite is a very tough rock so expect to work hard. The use of safety glasses is required and wise collectors wear gloves to protect their hands. We always wear jeans or heavy long pants and a long sleeve shirt for "find and break" prospecting. Small pieces of dolomite will sometimes fly when a rock breaks and they can easily cut or bruise a person wearing short pants. The "find and break" prospecting method described above is employed by many people who visit these mines and can lead to a few good finds. The keys to success are selection of good rocks to break and not being discouraged if you break fifty rocks without finding a crystal. (See image below to know what "vuggy rock" looks like. "Scavenger" Prospecting

Some visitors to the mines have been successful by simply searching the rock rubble for exposed crystals or searching the quarry floor for loose crystals. We found several really nice crystals this way and lots of tiny ones. We have also seen children find many nice crystals this way.

"Cavity" Prospecting

For finding large quanties of crystals, the most successful mining method is to break into large cavities in the quarry walls and floors using sledge hammers and wedges (power equipment is not permitted at the mines listed in this article). This method requires tools, patience, time and a knowledge of how to break an extremely durable dolostone.
On a recent visit to the Ace of Diamonds Mine at Middleville, New York we met Bill McIlquham of Peterborough, Ontario. Bill was mining for Herkimers with his wife Anne, their friend Laurie Mullett and mascot Duffy the Rockhound. They had located a large cavity and were carefully opening it. (Photos of their work shown here were kindly shared with Geology.com by Bill and fellow miners Cheryl Haberman and Alan Summer.)
The McIlquhams have been mining for Herkimers for about 12 years and have found many large cavities. A key element in their success is a nice array of hammers, wedges and pry-bars. Instead of bashing the dolomite repeatedly with a hammer to break it into tiny pieces, Bill uses a sledge hammer and wedges to very carefully exploit existing fractures in the rock. He begins by placing one wedge in a fracture and tapping it an inch or two deep. A second wedge is tapped into the fracture and additional wedges are used if needed. These wedges exert forces that penetrate into the rock and break large blocks of dolostone free. Fractures within the large dolostone blocks are then located and exploited until the large block has been reduced to smaller pieces that can be lifted from the quarry.
If a collector is lucky and determined to prevail over the durable dolostone, the reward could be breaking into a cavity. These cavities can contain a few to a few thousand nice Herkimer Diamonds that range in size from a couple of millimeters to over twenty centimeters in size. Perfect single crystals, doubles and crystal clusters might all be found in a single cavity.

The cavity shown above was opened by Anne and Bill. It contained over one hundred quartz crystals in a variety of sizes, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in length. A very nice prize for a day's work! Two large clusters from the cavity are shown below

Why hunt for Herkimer Diamonds? It's great fun and every time you break open a rock you will look with anticipation to see if you liberated an unseen quartz crystal. Nice Herkimer Diamonds are highly prized mineral specimens and are sought by mineral collectors worldwide. Large numbers of Herkimer crystals are also used in jewelry because their natural facets are both beautiful and interesting. Some people also seek Herkimer diamonds because they are thought to have "holistic qualities".

Large, Flawless Synthetic Diamonds by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

Improving the Properties of Diamonds

Researchers at the Carnegie Institution have developed a new technique for improving the properties of diamonds-not only adding sparkle to gemstones, but also simplifying the process of making high-quality diamond for scalpel blades, electronic components, even quantum computers. The results are published in the October 27-31 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A diamond may be forever, but the very qualities that make it a superior material for many purposes-its hardness, optical clarity, and resistance to chemicals, radiation, and electrical fields- can also make it a difficult substance with which to work.

Defects can be purged by a heating process called annealing, but this can turn diamond to graphite, the soft, grey form of carbon used in pencil leads. To prevent graphitization, diamond treatments have previously required high pressures (up to 60,000 times atmospheric pressure) during annealing, but high pressure/high temperature annealing is expensive and there are limits on the size and quantities of diamonds that can be treated.

Diamonds by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Yu-fei Meng, Chih-shiue Yan, Joseph Lai, Szczesny Krasnicki, Haiyun Shu, Thomas Yu, Qi Liang, Ho-kwang Mao, and Russell Hemley of the Carnegie Institution's Geophysical Laboratory used a method called chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow synthetic diamonds for their experiments.

Unlike other methods, which mimic the high pressures deep within the earth where natural diamonds are formed, the CVD method produces single-crystal diamonds at low pressure. The resulting diamonds, which can be grown very rapidly, have precisely controlled compositions and comparatively few defects.

Diamond Color Changes

"It is striking to see brown CVD diamonds transformed by this cost-efficient method into clear, pink-tinted crystals," says Yan. And because the researchers pinpointed the cause of the color changes in their diamonds, "Our work may also help the gem industry to distinguish natural from synthetic diamond."
"The most exciting aspect of this new annealing process is the unlimited size of the crystals that can be treated. The breakthrough will allow us to push to kilocarat diamonds of high optical quality" says coauthor Ho-kwang Mao. Because the method does not require a high pressure press, it promises faster processing of diamonds and more types of diamonds to be de-colored than current high-pressure annealing methods.

There is also no restriction on the size of crystals or the number of crystals, because the method is not limited by the chamber size of a high pressure press. The microwave unit is also significantly less expensive than a large high-pressure apparatus.

Diamonds for Specialized Manufacturing

"The optimized process will produce better diamond for new-generation high pressure devices and window materials with improved optical properties in the ultraviolet to infrared range." concludes laboratory director Russell Hemley. "It has the advantage of being applicable in CVD reactors as a subsequent treatment after growth."

The high-quality, single crystal diamond made possible by the new process has a wide variety of applications in science and technology, such as the use of diamond crystals as anvils in high-pressure research and in optical applications that take advantage of diamond's exceptional transparency. Among the more exotic future applications of the pink diamonds made in this way is quantum computing, which could use the diamonds' NV centers for storing quantum information.

Is Water a Mineral? -- Is Ice a Mineral?

What is a Mineral?

The word "mineral" is used by geologists for a group of naturally occurring crystalline substances. Gold, pyrite, quartz, calcite and fluorite are all examples of "minerals".

To be a mineral a substance must meet five requirements:

1. naturally occurring (not made by humans)
2. inorganic (not produced by an organism)
3. solid
4. a limited range of chemical compositions
5. ordered atomic structure

Is Water a Mineral?

If we compare the properties of water to the five requirements of the mineral definition we find that it fails to qualify as a mineral. Water is a liquid so it does not meet requirement #3 - being a solid.

However, at temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius water becomes the solid material that we call "ice".

Is Ice a Mineral?

If we compare the properties of ice to the five requirements of the mineral definition we find that it clearly meets the last four. However, requirement #1 presents a problem.

A natural snowflake would be considered to be a mineral because it forms naturally in Earth's atmosphere. However an ice cube made in a refrigerator would not be considered a mineral because it was produced by the actions of people.

So, ice is a mineral when it forms naturally but it is not a mineral when people play a role in producing it.

What is Mineral Water?

Mineral water is something entirely different. Here the word "mineral" is used in reference to dissolved solids that occur in the water as it is taken from a natural source such as a spring.

These dissolved substances occur in the water because while the water was in the ground it came into contact with mineral and non-mineral materials. Some of those materials were soluble and were dissolved by the water.

To be sold as a "mineral water" a liquid must be water, taken from a natural source, and contain at least 250 parts per million total dissolved solids - that occur naturally in the water.

Natural mineral waters are found at many locations worldwide and vary widely in composition. Under some circumstances the dissolved materials in the water would be considered to be "impurities". Under other circumstances these waters are bottled and sold to people who believe that the dissolved "minerals" might provide a health benefit.

These health benefits are often unproven and many natural waters contain dissolved materials that produce undesirable or even poisonous effects if consumed by people or animals.

Most Coastal Wetlands

Coastal Wetlands are at Greater Risk

Many coastal wetlands worldwide — including several on the U.S. Atlantic coast — may be more sensitive than previously thought to climate change and sea-level rise projections for the 21st century.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists made this conclusion from an international research modeling effort published December 1, 2010 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. Scientists identified conditions under which coastal wetlands could survive rising sea level.

Rapid / Slow Sea-Level Rise Scenarios

Using a rapid sea-level rise scenario, most coastal wetlands worldwide will disappear near the end of the 21st century. In contrast, under the slow sea-level rise projection, wetlands with low sediment availability and low tidal ranges are vulnerable and may drown. However, in the slow sea-level rise projection, wetlands with higher sediment availability would be more likely to survive.

Valuable Marshes and Estuaries are at Risk

Several coastal marshes along the east coast of the United States, for example, have limited sediment supplies and are likely to disappear this century. Vulnerable east coast marshes include the Plum Island Estuary (the largest estuary in New England) and coastal wetlands in North Carolina's Albemarle-Pamlico Sound (the second-largest estuary in the United States).

"Accurate information about the adaptability of coastal wetlands to accelerations in sea-level rise, such as that reported in this study, helps narrow the uncertainties associated with their disappearance," said USGS scientist Glenn Guntenspergen, an author of this report. "This research is essential for allowing decision makers to best manage local tradeoffs between economic and conservation concerns."

How the Rocky Mountains Formed?

The Formation of the Rockies Has Been An Enigma

The formation of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado has always puzzled scientists. Some 600 miles inland and far removed from the nearest tectonic plate, the only comparable inland mountain range is the Himalaya, which scientists deduced were formed by the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate.

"But there really was no India slamming into North America," said Craig Jones, a research fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) and a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Just how the Rockies have formed is an enigma."

Links between the Rockies, Gold, Silver and the Pierre Shale

But now scientists have further insight into the solution of this mystery. Jones and his team of researchers have proposed a new model of the mountains' creation and published their results in the February edition of the journal Geosphere. Not only could their research explain the origin of the Rockies, it could also elucidate other geological phenomena: why a swath of gold, silver and other precious metal deposits stretches across Colorado, and why a marine basin deepened in the states of Colorado and Wyoming just before the Rockies rose. The sediments of this marine basin are the Pierre Shale, a layer of dark-gray shale lying along the Front Range of Colorado. "Pierre Shale has this nasty tendency to bow up people's basements," Jones said. "Why more than a mile of this stuff was dumped into this area has been puzzling."

Previous Theories for Formation of the Rockies

Previously scientists believed that the oceanic plate subducting - moving under - North America rose to rub against the continent's bottom all the way from the ocean to Colorado. The theory was this action pushed the landmass into mountains much like a rug piles up underfoot, said Jones. But the hypothesis just doesn't explain the facts, he said. "That model predicted removal of material that is still found to lie underneath California and Arizona," he said. "That in and of itself was unsatisfying."

A New Model for the Rocky Mountains

The new model hinges on an unusually thick lithosphere – the stiff part of the Earth's surface that make up the tectonic plates – under Wyoming. The protrusion of this keel into more fluid mantle flowing below, created a suction that pulled down Southern Wyoming and Colorado and formed a basin, Jones said. This basin, or hole, in which Pierre Shale built up, amplified mountain-building forces far inland and forced the formation of the Rockies, he said. "A huge basin develops and all of a sudden these mountains come rocketing out of it," Jones said. "We end up with the counter-intuitive visage of mountains rising up out of a hole."

The hypothesis, if confirmed, could not only unravel the geological origin of the Rockies, but could also illuminate the mechanisms that have led to mountain ranges worldwide. "We are adding a new collection of processes that can control how mountain belts develop that previously haven't really been appreciated," Jones said. "Considering these processes might explain other puzzling mountain belts."

Beyond the Cake: Serving Food at a Kid’s Birthday Party

When families start planning a child’s birthday party, settling on a cake design is often one of the first decisions made.
Don’t forget about the other party food, though. Little bellies need more than just sugar. Whether you’re going to serve a full meal or just small bites, it’s important to plan a balanced menu.
Timing is Everything
Start the party at a time that matches your menu. Don’t, for instance, expect guests to arrive at 5 p.m. and eat only peanutsand cake. A dessert-and-snacks party is perfectly acceptable, but hold it at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. instead--not at a time when attendees should expect a full meal.Consider the Age Group
Older kids can eat just about anything--big slices of pizza, raw vegetables, super-sized sub sandwiches, whatever.
Serving those foods to toddlers doesn’t work, though. You’ll need to cut pizza--or anything you plan to offer--into small pieces. And be careful about feeding them anything too hard or crunchy, like carrots, or other foods that can cause choking in young children.
Serve Kid-Friendly Food
“Kid friendly” doesn’t mean you have to microwave corndogs and mix up bowls of Mac & Cheese. Put out foods that are easy to eat and have broad appeal.
Need some ideas?

• Buy the hard, thin breadsticks that come in a box in your grocery store’s bread aisle. Slather one end with cream cheese, then wrap a thin slice of turkey, ham or other deli meat around it.
• Make fruit kebabs by cutting pineapple, cantaloupe and watermelon into bite-sized pieces then threading them onto wooden or plastic skewers. Promptly remove the skewers from the table after the fruit has been eaten so the kids don’t use them as weapons or use something with a blunt end, like chopsticks, for younger kids.
• Make ordinary sandwiches fun by cutting them with cookie cutters or turn bananas, celery sticks or other healthy snacks into animals with a few well-placed raisins or carrot slices.

Match the ThemeIf you can, choose foods that fit the birthday party theme. Serve Goldfish Crackers and hot dogs cut to look like octopuses at an under-the-sea party, for example. Make spaghetti and meatballs for a Lady and the Tramp bash (perhaps with butter and parmesan cheese instead of marinara sauce to cut down on the mess). Or serve small, crust-less tea sandwiches for a teddy bear tea party.

12 Rainy Day Activities

Don't let a little precipitation keep your kids parked on the couch all day: Try one of these rainy day activities, games, or outings that encourage physical fitness (and keep the "I'm bored" complaints to a minimum too).

1. Play treasure hunters.

This is one of those rainy day activities that requires a little advance parental prep, but is always a big hit with kids (whether it's a rainy day or not, really!). Stash clues around the house (adjust difficulty based on the ages of your kids; use picture cues for little ones, tricky puns for older children), directing kids to hunt for a hidden prize.

2. Let's put on a show!

Challenge a group of kids to stage a play or talent show. Give them a theme or opening lines to get them started, if they need a little jump start (how about "Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Rainy Days, a princess was born with webbed duck feet ... ").

3. Bring outdoor games in for a surprising switch on rainy day activities.

Play basketball with a soft foam or sponge ball, or just wad up some newspaper; the hoop can be any basket or receptacle (either hung on the wall or resting on the floor). Have kids shoot from different parts of the room or in different ways, in an indoor version of HORSE. Basketball not your speed? Try indoor bowling.

4. Take a fit field trip.

Hit an indoor pool (if you don't have a gym or community center membership, check hotels—they sometimes sell day passes), ice or roller rink, climbing wall, bowling alley, or inflatables play space to blow off steam.

5. Make a sand-free sandbox for lots of rainy day activities.

Use a large plastic bin, dishpan, or aluminum-foil roasting pan as your box. Fill with rice or oatmeal and stock with scoops, funnels, spoons, toy cars, a plastic tea set—whatever suits your child's interests.

6. Teach your dog some new tricks.

7. Let's go to the videotape!

Of Reality TV and Fantasy Sports

In thinking about the crazy times that we live in, I have a couple observations about TV and sports. The current generation has witnessed the rise in reality TV and fantasy sports. Both of which are opposite to what each form of entertainment usually has to offer.
Fantasy and sports are seemingly at odds. No doubt there are many fans who like to live in the imaginary world of what might have been, though these are usually fans of losing teams. Or worse yet, they are know-it-all Monday morning quarterbacks. But the fact remains that championships are decided by the actual feats on the real field of play. The innovation of fantasy sports has created a measurable outlet for statistics-obsessed super-fan to match his trivial knowledge against that of his counterparts across.
On the other hand we have reality TV, which also would seem to be a contradiction in terms. Tradionally TV has offered a healthy dose of fiction. The term "reality" marks a departure from fictional story lines, but is still a bit of a misnomer, since the contraints of the game are certainly contrived. The editing choices of producers shape the finished product also resulting in a contrived product. Opinionated judges serve a flashpoint for people to love or hate, though often little else. Despite the above contrivances, some show formats in reality TV have outcomes determined in part or whole by the audience, not a panel of judges. The appeal of this type of reality TV show is the same appeal that fantasy sports has. Each gives a conduit for viewers to be able to become participants.
All of this raises the question of why some people seem compelled to participate in this way? While I don't have the answer, I do have some guesses. Perhaps people have all along had the desire to interact, and the means is only now becoming available. Perhaps it helps people who are alone to connect to something larger. Perhaps these are profit machines for corporate entertainment conglerates. I leave the final determination of these facts to other parties.

The Misadventures of Oliver Booth: Life in the Lap of Luxury

This book is easy, breezy, and fun. Fittingly, those are just the qualities one might hope to find in a book about South Florida. The pages fly by quite nicely and the mischief to be had is quite enjoyable, if not mostly good-natured. Oliver Booth is the butt of most of the jokes in the book, but that turns out to be a good fit since he has quite a big one himself. In the world of fiction there are times when the character at whose expense the laughs come elicits empathy from the reader. However, the author has done a sufficient job of painting Mr. Booth in a bad light that this does not happen, as should be done in a good satire. Additionally, much of the ill fortune that befalls Mr. Booth is of his own making. While Mr. Booth is the namesake of the book he is not the true protagonist. That honor belongs to a grounded waiter by the name of Bernard. This real-life French waiter introduces not only common sense but also a sense of reality into the otherwise out-of-touch world of Palm Beach. He is sympathetic to the reader, as well as to the well heeled, but also well grounded, Mrs. Van Buren who becomes his benefactor, and Mr. Booth's tormentor (I use this term loosely here).
The book bounces back and forth between Paris and Palm Beach. Yet, in both cases the portrayal is a very selective and superficial one. The book of course lacks depth, much like a how a comic strip is very two-dimensional. However, much like a comic, there is still a narrative to be followed and laughs to be had in a two-dimensional portrayal. Many of the characters and settings are merely devices to move the plot along or to further a joke. Yet in these roles the characters and settings included prove to be more than adequately functional. The book is a fast read and is good for some smiles and chuckles. If you are expecting some groundbreaking, insightful analysis of Palm Beach, you will be disappointed. But if you are looking to witness a few hearty jabs and Palm Beach culture, then you will be completely satisfied.
An interesting tidbit is that the author of the book is related to the Donald. Mr. Trump even gives his assessment of the book that "it should be a big success." Not that Mr. Desmond is trying to trade on Donald Trump's name or anything, but this review is plastered on the front cover of the book. Even without the Trump connection, Mr. Desmond is eminently over-qualified to write this book, as a graduate of the University of Chicago and holder of a PhD.
Not to assail Desmond's knowledge of Palm Beach, but I disagree with Donald's assessment that the book somehow reflects a Palm Beach insider's point of view. Any observant author could also have written a similarly superficial treatment after only a week's vacation in Palm Beach. All of those issues aside, the book is a fun read. It goes by quickly and is never boring. For what it is, it finds just the right tone and temperature.

A Strange Salute

Walking up South Washington Street around lunch time as I was crossing the street I saw a man sitting on a five gallon plastic bucket about half way up the next block on sidewalk in front of a dive bar. He was wearing cut-off painter pants and no shirt. From the looks of his tan this wasn't his first time to sit idle under the summer sun. He was slouching a bit, with his head low and his shoulder slumped forward.
As I got closer, he suddenly sat upright as if rising to attention, attentive in his posture and his gaze. Once upright he commenced to solute towards the 4 lanes of one-way traffic coming down Washington. I wondered where he was directing this solute so I looked into the street to try and figure it out. There among all the passenger cars was a large Budweiser delivery truck. As it passed the man rose to his feet and once it went by he broke the salute. "All hail the king (of beers)."

By observing these lessons McCain would have found a simple solution for drawing attention away from the issue of his advanced age. All he needed to do was find a running mate even older than himself.
Looking back on the 2008 Election using the principle above, Barrack Obama made the right pick to complete his presidential ticket. While Joe Biden the running mate had many flaws, it was one of these flaws that made him a great pick. By choosing a loose cannon, shoot from the hip, master of gaffe, Obama was able to highlight his own thoughtfulness and eloquence.

The original idea behind creating robots was to use them do the work of humans, particularly hard work or work in a dangerous environment. Robots which must work instead of humans require some way to manipulate objects; pick up, modify, destroy, or otherwise have an effect and so far the science is finding it very hard to recreate human moves in robots. Mr. Data is sadly still far far away :)

The current existing robots can walk or run but this movement doesn't look that similar to humans and it also uses great deal of energy which means that robotics needs to make future robots more energy efficient.

Today's robots are used for various purposes all the way from vacuuming floors, mowing lawns, cleaning drains to investigating other planets, building cars, as well as being used in military operations.

Aliens - The good, the bad and the ugly

There are more people in the world who believe in the existence of other forms of life outside our planet than those who believe our planet is the only planet in universe that supports life.

Aliens are usually imagined (particularly because of Sci-Fi movies) as technologically superior monster-like creatures whose only goal is to collect the resources of our planet and in the process wiping out everything that breathes including human race.

The bad yes, the ugly also yes, the good not that much at least this is what most people think about aliens. If aliens really decide to pay us a visit then we should pray that they are completely the opposite of the image most of us have created about them.

Lets get real if aliens are really violent monsters with super-advanced technology then we must really hope our planet won't come anywhere near their ever-expanding horizon. On the other hand, if they are on the some sort of philanthropic mission towards the less intelligent creatures then they would really be welcome to pay us a visit and learn us a thing or two.

But who knows, perhaps when we make first contact we'll be the ones more technologically advanced. Since we know so little about our universe any scenario is possible in this story, no matter how strange it may seem from the first look.

Perhaps aliens have already infiltrated our planet and are waiting for the right time to show their existence to the rest of the world, hopefully in a peaceful manner.

Ocean acidification facts

Ocean acidification refers to the currently ongoing process of decreasing the pH of the Earth's oceans as a result of excessive levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Basically speaking, the absorption of too much carbon dioxide by seawater results in the ocean acidification. It is estimated that around quarter of the carbon dioxide that humans emit in the atmosphere each year ends up being dissolved into the ocean.

Ocean acidification (unless stopped) will in years to come create huge marine biodiversity loss. The scientists have estimated that the current acidification in our oceans is on a track to reach acidity levels higher than any seen in the last 65 million years.

Among marine organisms mostly affected by ocean acidification are corals. Corals are already finding it hard to cope with the increased acidity in our oceans, and it is estimated that the recruitment of new corals could drop by staggering 73 percent over the next century.

Corals are extremely vulnerable to ocean acidification because they (together with oysters, some algae species and sea urchins) belong to calcifying organisms and ocean acidification therefore makes it extremely difficult to build their shells and skeletons.

The large number of scientists believes that ocean acidification will likely reduce coral reef growth to alarming levels before the end of this century unless world significantly cuts CO2 emissions.

Ocean acidification is not always caused just by atmospheric CO2 being absorbed by seawater, in certain areas ocean acidification may be driven by causes such as agricultural runoff or soil erosion.

Oceans today are around 25 percent more acidic than they were 300 years ago.

Polar seas (such as Arctic Ocean) are considered extremely vulnerable to ocean acidification because the high solubility of CO2 in cold waters results in naturally low carbonate saturation states.

The full effects of ocean acidification to marine organisms are still unknown although most scientists agree that ocean acidification will in years to come create massive changes in marine biodiversity (if of course world continues current trend of massive CO2 emissions).

It is impossible to tackle ocean acidification without tackling the climate change issue first. The best way to tackle both of these big environmental threat would be an international climate deal that would oblige all countries to massive CO2 cuts.

Take off clothing and place it in a sectioned laundry hamper according to lights, darks, whites, man made or natural.

Walk to bathroom wearing long dressing gown. If husband seen along the way cover up any exposed flesh and rush to the bathroom.

Look at womanly physique in the mirror and stick out belly. Complain and whine about getting fat.

Get in shower. Look for facecloth, armcloth, loin cloth, long loofah, wide loofah and pumice stone.

Wash hair once with Cucumber and Lamprey shampoo with 83 added vitamins.Wash hair again with Cucumber and Lamprey shampoo with 83 added vitamins.

Condition hair with cucumber and lamprey conditioner with enhanced natural crocus oil. Leave on hair for 15 minutes.

Wash face with crushed apricot facial scrub for ten minutes until red raw.

Rinse conditioner off hair taking at least 15 minutes to make sure that it's all come off.

Shave armpits and legs. Consider shaving bikini area but decide to get it waxed instead.

Scream loudly when husband flushes toilet and water loses pressure and turns red hot.

Turn off shower.

Squeegee all wet surfaces in shower. Spray mould spots with Tilex. Get out of shower. Dry with towel the size of small African country.

Wrap hair in super absorbent second towel.

Check entire body for remotest sign of spots. Attack with nails and or tweezers (if you can find them).

Return to bedroom wearing long dressing gown and towel on head. If husband seen, cover up any exposed areas and then rush to bedroom to spend hour and a half getting dressed.

Shower like a man...

Take off clothes while sitting on bed and leave them in a pile.

Walk naked to bathroom. If wife seen, shake knob at her while shouting "Way Hey!!"

Look in mirror and suck in gut to see your manly physique.

Admire size of knob in mirror, scratch bollocks and smell fingers for one last whiff.

Get in shower.

Don't bother to look for wash cloth, don't need one.

Wash face.

Wash armpits.

Laugh at how loud farts sound in the shower.

Wash bollocks and the surrounding area.

Wash arse, leaving hair on soap.

Shampoo hair but do not use conditioner.

Make Mohican hairstyle with shampoo. Pull back curtain to see self in mirror.

Piss in shower.

Rinse off and get out of shower. Fail to notice water on floor because shower curtain outside bath for whole shower time.

Partially dry off.

Look at self in mirror, flex muscles and admire size of knob again.

Leave shower curtain open and wet bath mat on floor.

Leave bathroom light and fan on.

Return to bedroom with towel around waist. If you pass wife, pull off towel, grab knob, go "Yeah baby" and thrust pelvis at her.

Put on yesterday's clothes.
